What are the symptoms of monkeypox?
News Desk
Islamabad: The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued an advisory in response to the unprecedented multi-country outbreak of Monkeypox in non-endemic regions.
According to the advisory, 99,518 cases of Monkeypox have been reported worldwide, with 208 fatalities recorded so far. Since April 2023, Pakistan has reported 11 cases, resulting in one death.
The advisory noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Monkeypox a global health emergency.
The NIH’s advisory outlines guidelines for managing Monkeypox. It states that those affected by the virus typically develop a rash and fever, primarily on the face and body. Other symptoms include headaches and body aches. The illness generally lasts for two to four weeks.
The current Monkeypox outbreak is the second strain known to cause fatalities; however, the survival rate remains high, with 99 percent of patients recovering. A different strain of Monkeypox has also been reported in African countries.
The NIH emphasized the importance of strict precautions, including maintaining a clean environment, enforcing mask-wearing for medical staff, and ensuring regular handwashing.
Patients diagnosed with Monkeypox should be isolated until they fully recover.
