What Are the Early Warning Signs of Liver Disease?

News Desk

Islamabad: Liver diseases often remain asymptomatic until the liver is severely damaged.

As the largest internal organ, the liver is crucial for controlling blood clotting, excreting toxins, and producing bile.

However, lifestyle habits and various diseases can impair its function, leading to serious health issues if left untreated.

Different liver diseases present with different symptoms, but many only become apparent when the liver is significantly compromised.

Here are five early warning signs to help assess your liver health.

Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes

Jaundice is a common sign of liver disease, characterized by yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes. This occurs due to an accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, which the liver normally processes and eliminates.

Dark Urine

While dark urine can be a sign of dehydration, it can also indicate liver disease. The dark color is often due to elevated bilirubin levels in the body.

Mental Confusion

Sudden confusion, forgetfulness, or other cognitive issues may signal liver problems or other health conditions. Liver dysfunction can significantly affect mental status.

Swelling of Legs, Ankles

Although swelling itself is not exclusive to liver problems, liver disease can impair blood flow and increase pressure in the veins, leading to fluid accumulation and noticeable swelling in the legs and abdomen.

Excessive Bleeding

If you bruise or bleed easily, it could indicate liver damage. The liver produces proteins essential for blood clotting, so impaired liver function can result in increased bleeding and bruising.

Early detection of these symptoms can be crucial in managing liver health and preventing severe complications.
