Waste Disposal: 25 Composite Plants To Be Built In Pindi

News Desk

Rawalpindi: 25 composite plants, including ten in Rawalpindi and five each in Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal districts, would be established for waste disposal, informed Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Liaqat Ali Chatha.

Presiding over the meeting regarding composite plant establishment on Wednesday, Chatha instructed that an early proposal be prepared for the establishment of these plants with the help of local community and welfare organisations as well as philanthropists.

Commissioner told that nearly 60 percent of the collected waste consisted of organic waste which was converted into composite form after processing. Adding to that, 25 percent of the remaining waste is recyclable, while only 15 percent is disposed of at a landfill site.

Liaqat Ali said that Integrated Resource Recovery Centres (IRRC) are the need of the hour as garbage is segregated in a modern way after door-to-door collection via this method. This model had been launched in Pakistan after achieving success in other Asian countries, he added.

Ali further directed to schedule another meeting to examine the progress and determine the locations where these plants could be installed during the following fifteen days.

In order to prevent the expense and labour of moving the garbage from Murree to the Losar site, the Commissioner ordered the construction of two waste treatment plants in Murree.

Additionally, Chatha further said that the composite plant will reduce money spent on waste transfer significantly, benefit the ecology and stop the spread of infectious diseases brought on by squalor.

The meeting was briefed that the primary focus of the model is organic waste which typically comes from kitchens, restaurants, plant trimming, and wholesale vegetable or fruit markets, while the composite produced from this plant is very important for nurseries and farmers.

It further said that these plants are being successfully operated at five locations in Pakistan, including G-15, B-17, Jinnah Garden Islamabad, Mardan KP and Sarkand Town Sindh. Recently, this plant was installed in Tehsil Khazro of Attock in Rawalpindi Division.

The feasibility report of the plant in Tehsil Gujar Khan has also been prepared and around two kanals of space are required to scale two tonnes of waste, according to the IRRC.
