Islamabad: For a long time, researchers have claimed that walking 10,000 steps a day is healthy, but now new research has shown that walking at least 5,000 steps is enough to stay fit.

According to the British Broadcasting Organization (BBC) report, research was conducted on 226,000 people from around the world which showed that a person remains fit and healthy by walking at least 4,000 steps.

In addition, research has shown that walking 2,300 steps per day is beneficial for the heart and blood vessels.

Researchers say that the more steps you take, the healthier you will be.

A team from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States was involved in the study, in which researchers analysed the benefits of walking and its effects on physical health.

University of Lodz Professor Maciej Bunch said that although there are modern drugs for medical treatment, full reliance on these drugs is not the only solution to health problems.

“I believe we should always emphasize that other lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can reduce the risk of heart disease,” Bunch added.

They suggest that by making these lifestyle changes, we can reduce drug use to some extent.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, the, 3.2 million deaths are reported every year due to a lack of physical activity.

Fitness trainer Honey Fine says health problems arise when we spend too much time sitting.

“Sitting for long periods of time can slow the body’s metabolism and affect muscle growth and strength which can lead to pain, Dr Maciej stated.

Professor further added that sitting for long periods of time can lead to all kinds of back problems and puts constant pressure on the back which can lead to many problems later in life.

Emphasizing the importance of physical exercise, Dr Bunch told that standing up from time to time, going out for shopping, washing the floor and doing housework keep the body active, and calories are reduced.

Earlier, a medical study in the United States reported that walking 9,000 steps per day can help protect the brain from age-related degeneration and damage to brain tissue caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

The results showed that people who are used to walking slow down the process of dementia.

Earlier, a 2017 study by the University of Limerick and Trinity College Dublin found that exercising 20 minutes a day, five days a week, can reduce depression, diabetes and heart disease.
