Viral Infections Surge in Lahore, Experts Concerned About Possible COVID-19 Resurgence

Lahore: A wave of viral infections is currently sweeping across Lahore, with hundreds of patients reporting symptoms such as high fever, persistent cough, and body aches over the past three weeks.
Medical experts have raised concerns that this surge in illness could be linked to a resurgence of the coronavirus, although official testing has remained limited.
Both government and private healthcare facilities in the city have seen a noticeable increase in patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. While doctors suspect COVID-19 may be contributing to the uptick, testing for the virus has significantly declined.
“Coronavirus is spreading, and patients are coming to hospitals, but COVID-19 tests are no longer being conducted,” said Professor Dr. Irfan Malik, Head of Pulmonology at a Lahore medical university.
Private laboratories report that very few individuals are seeking COVID-19 tests, and the Punjab Health Department has stopped routine testing, despite the rising number of cases. Medical professionals suggest that several strains of the virus are circulating simultaneously, and while they no longer routinely recommend testing, they emphasize that the symptoms are consistent with previous COVID-19 infections.
Health experts are urging the public to remain cautious. Those exhibiting symptoms have been advised to self-isolate and wear masks, particularly in crowded areas, to prevent further spread. Quarantine has been recommended for anyone showing symptoms.
“We’re not out of danger yet,” warned a senior physician at a government hospital. “Precaution remains the best form of protection.”
