Universities Must Bridge Research, Policy to Fight Climate Threats

Islamabad: National and international educationists and scientists have called for greater interdisciplinary research and global scientific collaboration to address urgent challenges such as climate change, food security, energy, and health.

Speakers at the inaugural session of the first international conference, “Frontiers in Science,” held at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), emphasized the need for a comprehensive and collective strategy to align modern scientific research with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The conference highlighted the visible impacts of climate change, including shortened winters, prolonged summers, and shifting rainfall patterns, which have disrupted Pakistan’s climate and agricultural cycles.

Experts stressed that such complex issues cannot be solved through individual efforts alone, and called for a global, coordinated approach to climate resilience and sustainable development.

Speakers also underlined the relevance of guidance from the “Holy Qur’an”, describing its principles as universal and timeless solutions that can inform modern scientific and societal challenges.

Dr Nasir Mahmood highlighted the untapped potential of university students, urging that their research and creative ideas be translated into practical applications, business models, and market-ready innovations.

Such efforts, he said, could generate employment and contribute to national economic development.

He further noted that universities must serve as bridges between research, innovation, and policymaking, linking scientific efforts to sustainable development, environmental protection, and societal needs.

Dr Sher Muhammad described the conference as a critical step toward promoting modern scientific trends, strengthening global collaboration, and ensuring that interdisciplinary research benefits society directly.

According to Conference Secretary Dr Saima Qadeer, the two-day event includes keynote addresses by national and international scientists, thematic sessions, research paper presentations, and policy dialogues.

These activities aim to connect science with societal needs, highlight modern scientific advancements, empower young researchers, and foster global academic and research partnerships.
