In a recent development on Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, the UN resolution deploring Russian action in the strongest possible manner was passed today. The resolution cast 141 votes in favour, five against and 35 abstentions.

Undoubtedly, UN will claim success but the split is already apparent. It clearly indicates that Putin is not without his vocal and silent allies. This follows the earlier failure of the Security Council, on 25th February, to secure a resolution condemning the invasion. The Security Conical resolution was vetoed by Russia and abstained by China, India and UAE. In explaining the abstention of India on the Security Council, TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to UN, issued the following statement: “Dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes, however daunting that may appear at this moment. It is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up. We must return to it.” In the diplomatic language, this is a categorical rejection of the resolution.
