Baku:The United Nations climate chief, Simon Stiell, has called on delegates at the COP29 summit to “cut the theatrics” as negotiations remain stalled over a critical climate finance deal. The summit, hosted in Azerbaijan, has yet to reach a breakthrough on raising $1 trillion annually to support developing nations in combating climate change.
Stiell urged nations to avoid tactics that waste time and derail goodwill, emphasizing the high stakes of the discussions. With the deadline looming, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev highlighted the need for G20 nations to lead decisively.
The talks are further complicated by disputes over fossil fuel commitments and the allocation of financial responsibilities, with developed nations demanding contributions from wealthier emerging economies like China.
Meanwhile, climate-vulnerable nations continue to call for urgent action to secure funding for critical mitigation and adaptation projects.
