Reflecting on the ongoing conflicts worldwide, including the troubling situation in Gaza, Guterres acknowledged the significant pain and suffering affecting countless lives. “Conflicts persist, claiming tens of thousands of civilian lives, many among them women and children,” he remarked, highlighting the plight of millions displaced, battling hunger, and disease.
Additionally, Guterres stressed the critical threat posed by the planet’s precarious state, characterized by record-high temperatures and worsening impacts of climate change. “2023 has been a year marred by immense suffering, violence, and climate-related upheavals,” the Secretary-General noted, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Guterres emphasized the scarcity of trust and cautioned against blame games and conflicts, emphasizing the necessity of unity. “Humanity’s strength lies in our unity. We must bridge divides for collective solutions—be it in climate action, economic opportunities, or fostering a more equitable global financial system,” he asserted.
Addressing discriminatory practices and animosity poisoning international relations, Guterres highlighted the importance of ensuring that advancing technologies, like artificial intelligence, serve as positive influences for society.
