Islamabad: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning following the United States’ recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the development a “dangerous escalation” that could ignite a wider regional conflict with devastating global consequences.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Guterres said he was “gravely alarmed” by the use of force against Iran, describing the situation as a critical moment for global peace and stability.

“This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on edge,” he said. “The use of force by the United States against Iran poses a direct threat to international peace and security.”

Guterres warned that tensions in the Middle East are reaching a boiling point and could quickly spiral out of control. “There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly escalate — with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world,” he cautioned.

The UN chief called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and urged UN Member States to avoid further provocations. He stressed the importance of adhering to international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

“At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos. I urge all Member States to de-escalate and uphold their international obligations,” Guterres stated.

Reaffirming the UN’s longstanding position on conflict resolution, the Secretary-General emphasized that military action is not the answer. “There is no military solution. The only viable path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace,” he said.

The statement follows US airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Washington claims the attacks were aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but Tehran has condemned them as a breach of its sovereignty and a clear violation of international law.

The strikes have drawn concern from world leaders and international organizations, with growing calls for immediate diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.

Netanyahu Praises Trump’s Iran Strikes as ‘Historic Turning Point’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to launch airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, describing it as a “historic turning point” that could reshape the future of the Middle East.

In a video message released shortly after the strikes, Netanyahu commended Trump’s leadership and the scale of the military operation, calling it a “bold and righteous” move that underscores the unmatched strength of the United States.

“Congratulations, President Trump. Your bold decision to target Iran’s nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history,” Netanyahu stated. He called the operation a pivotal moment, asserting that it would prevent Iran—what he described as “the world’s most dangerous regime”—from acquiring the world’s most dangerous weapons.

Netanyahu also referenced “Operation Rising Lion,” a recent series of Israeli covert actions against Iranian interests, noting their success but emphasizing that the American strikes far surpassed them in scale and impact.

“In Operation Rising Lion, Israel has done truly amazing things. But in tonight’s action, America has been truly unsurpassed,” he said.

According to a senior White House official cited by CBS News, Trump and Netanyahu spoke shortly after the strikes. The U.S. had reportedly informed Israel ahead of the operation.

The Pentagon confirmed that its most powerful non-nuclear weapon—the 30,000-pound GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator—was used to strike three key nuclear sites: Fordo, Natanz, and Esfahan. Each facility was reportedly hit with two bunker-buster bombs.

Reaffirming his long-held stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Netanyahu reiterated the motto he shares with Trump: “Peace through strength.”

“First comes strength, then comes peace,” he said. “Tonight, President Trump and the United States acted with a lot of strength.”

Concluding his remarks, Netanyahu expressed gratitude on behalf of Israel and praised the U.S.-Israel alliance.

“President Trump, I thank you. The people of Israel thank you. The forces of civilisation thank you. God bless America. God bless Israel. And may God bless our unshakeable alliance,” he said.

Iran has yet to issue an official response, and the full extent of the damage to the nuclear sites remains unknown. Meanwhile, international leaders have voiced concern that the U.S. strikes could escalate tensions and risk a broader regional conflict.
