Islamabad: Pakistan’s middle-order batter Umar Akmal has set social media abuzz after posting a training video from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), hinting at a possible return to competitive cricket.
The 34-year-old cricketer shared a short clip on X (formerly Twitter), showing himself working out and expressing gratitude to High-Performance Center Director Aaqib Javed for his support.
The video quickly gained traction online, with cricket fans urging him to stage a comeback. Many praised his renewed energy, while others emphasized the importance of fitness and suggested he restart through domestic cricket to make a strong case for selection.
Umar Akmal’s career has been marked by flashes of brilliance as well as setbacks, including disciplinary issues and fitness concerns. In past interviews, he openly spoke about the challenges he faced in Pakistan cricket, alleging that external pressures influenced team selections.
He claimed that captains were sometimes directed to drop him but credited former skipper Raza Ali Dar for resisting such pressure. “There used to be calls telling captains not to include me in the team… but he stood firm and said, how can I drop Umar Akmal?” he recalled.
Despite the controversies, Umar Akmal remains a player with undeniable talent. His latest training video has reignited debate among fans about whether he can still make a comeback to Pakistan cricket.
