London: The Guardian Media Group (GMG) has announced its decision to sell The Observer, the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, to online news outlet Tortoise Media.
Despite a 48-hour strike by over 500 journalists protesting the deal, GMG and its owner, the Scott Trust, have approved the sale in principle.
Founded in 1791, The Observer will continue as a Sunday publication under Tortoise Media, which has committed over £25 million to revamp the paper editorially and commercially over the next five years.
Tortoise, established in 2019 by former BBC News director James Harding, aims to merge its podcasting and live event expertise with the publication.
Guardian News & Media’s editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner, acknowledged staff concerns but emphasized the decision as the best path forward. GMG CEO Anna Bateson highlighted that the move safeguards the paper’s 233-year legacy.
Additionally, the Scott Trust will become a major shareholder in Tortoise Media, reinforcing its commitment to quality journalism and liberal values.
