UK Formally Recognises State of Palestine: PM Starmer

London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday announced that Britain has formally recognised the State of Palestine, marking a historic shift in decades of British foreign policy.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” Starmer said in a video message posted on X.

He underlined that the recognition aimed to ensure “a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state,” stressing that neither currently exists.

The UK move comes amid growing international concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Britain’s decision follows similar announcements by Commonwealth members Canada and Australia.

Starmer renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and urged Hamas to release hostages seized during its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. He branded Hamas a “brutal terror organisation” and confirmed plans to tighten sanctions against the group, saying it could play no role in a future Palestinian state.

“Our call for a genuine two-state solution is the exact opposite of their hateful vision,” he said.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who warned the move “endangers our existence” and amounts to an “absurd reward” for Hamas.

Starmer, however, insisted recognition was “not a reward” for militants, but a necessary step to keep alive the prospect of peace.

“The starvation and devastation are utterly intolerable,” Starmer added. “This death and destruction horrifies us all. It must end.”
