Shanghai: Shanghai was struck by its second typhoon in just a few days, leading to flooding across roads and neighborhoods.
Typhoon Pulasan made landfall in the Fengxian district on Thursday night with wind speeds reaching up to 83 kilometers per hour.
Despite heavy downpours continuing through Friday morning, the storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
Footage shared on social media showed residents navigating through waterlogged streets, although no severe damage or casualties have been reported so far. Videos also depicted police officers helping to push stalled cars through the floodwaters. By late morning, many flooded areas had been cleared and were dry.
Pulasan hit just days after Typhoon Bebinca, which was the most powerful storm to hit Shanghai in 75 years.
Bebinca caused significant disruption, including felling over 1,800 trees, cutting electricity to 30,000 households, and prompting the evacuation of more than 400,000 people.
Scientists warn that climate change, driven by greenhouse gas emissions, is intensifying the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, continues to face increasing climate challenges. However, its per capita emissions remain lower than those of the United States.
