Beijing: Two Pakistani students at Gannan Medical University in China, Yousaf Khan and Muhammad Rafeeullah Jawaad, have been hailed for their quick-thinking and heroic actions in saving the life of an elderly man who suffered a medical emergency at Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station.
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 7. While traveling in Shanghai, Yousaf and Jawaad noticed an elderly man lying unconscious on the ground.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the students rushed to his aid. Upon assessment, they found the man unresponsive, with no breathing, a faint pulse, and cyanotic lips—clear signs of a life-threatening condition.
Without delay, Yousaf began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while Jawaad monitored the man’s condition.
After four rounds of CPR, the elderly man gradually regained consciousness and began breathing again. The students stayed by his side until an ambulance arrived to transport him to a hospital for further medical care.
Their swift and composed response earned them praise from onlookers, police officers, and medical staff at the scene. Their courage, composure, and medical expertise were crucial in saving the man’s life, according to China Economic Net (CEN).
Yousaf and Jawaad, both from KP Province in Pakistan, are pursuing their bachelor’s degrees in clinical medicine at Gannan Medical University in southern China.
“The university’s emphasis on ethics and morality has always inspired us to help others,” Jawaad said. “Our medical education has equipped us with the skills to respond effectively in emergency situations.”
Yousaf, who performed CPR for the first time during the incident, expressed great pride and satisfaction. “Saving lives is the sacred duty of every doctor and medical student,” he said. “I would do it again without hesitation in any similar situation.”
