Two killed, three injured as pillar of under-construction Bhara Kahu Bypass collapses

ISLAMABAD: At least two labourers were killed while three others were injured as a pillar of an under-construction bypass flyover in Bhara Kahu collapsed on Saturday morning, the ICT police said.

As per a tweet by the Islamabad police, two labourers were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) where two succumbed to injuries. Three other injured labourers were taken to the Polyclinic Hospital where one could not survive as well.

The tweet further added that senior officials of the Islamabad police and district administration, including IG Islamabad Dr Akbar Nasir and Chief Commissioner Noorul Amin Mengal, were present at the incident site to supervise the rescue work.

Noorul Amin Mengal said that according to the preliminary investigation, “two to three trolleys had passed by the bridge between 2-3am and had hit it”, a local news media reported.

The CDA chairman added that both “safety and traffic protocols” has been violated and a committee had been formed to find out “who was responsible so they could take legal action against them”. Further details will be revealed once the committee finds them out, said a CDA official.

According to the details, soon after the tragic incident, the rescue teams, assistant commissioners and teams of national logistic cell (NLC) rushed to the site and started rescue work and pulled  labourers out of the rubble, said a press release issued by the deputy commissioner office on Saturday afternoon.

According to rescue officials, heavy construction material was being pitched on it when the portion caved in. As a result, two labourers died and three sustained injuries.  The victims were shifted to PIMS and Polyclinic Hospital.

Meanwhile, a committee under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon was also constituted to review all aspects related to the incident.

In a separate tweet, the police said a committee, which will be headed by Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon, has been constituted to “review all aspects related to the incident”.

The 5.6 km-long Bhara Kahu bypass, including a 1km flyover, starts from Murree Road at Malpur and culminates on Murree Road near the Jugi bus stop from where the flyover begins till the end of the local bazaar towards Murree.

Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan has directed the chief commissioner Islamabad to ensure completion of rescue operation at earliest.

He further directed to provide the best medical assistance to injured persons and also prayed for their early recovery.

The interior minister also directed the CDA chairman to inquire about the reasons behind this incident and fix those responsible for it.
