Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump made the first official appointment of his second administration on Thursday, naming his chief of staff, with other key positions expected to be filled in the “days and weeks ahead,” according to his team.
“Some individuals will return from Trump’s first term, while new faces will join the administration,” senior aide Jason Miller stated during an appearance on Fox Business.
Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, and Howard Lutnick, founder of Cantor Fitzgerald, are leading the transition process. Below are some of the top contenders for key roles in Trump’s upcoming administration:
Chief of Staff
Susie Wiles, Trump’s election campaign chief, was appointed as chief of staff on Thursday. Wiles, known for her behind-the-scenes work, enjoys wide support within the Trump team.
Attorney General
The attorney general will play a crucial role, especially with Trump’s radical immigration policies and ongoing legal issues. Republican Senators Mike Lee, Eric Schmitt, and former National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe are reported to be under consideration.
Secretary of State
Ric Grenell, former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence, is a strong contender for Secretary of State. Other names, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, are also circulating.
Defense Secretary & CIA Director
Kash Patel, former aide to Trump, and ultra-conservative Texas Senator Ratcliffe are being considered for the CIA director position. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, however, has ruled himself out for Defense Secretary.
Treasury Secretary
Billionaire hedge fund managers Scott Bessent and John Paulson are among those in the running to oversee Trump’s economic agenda.
Government Efficiency
Tesla CEO Elon Musk may lead a new department aimed at cutting federal spending by $2 trillion, though specifics on these cuts remain unclear.
Other Key Figures
Robert Kennedy Jr. may be given a significant role, despite his controversial stances on health issues. Other potential appointees include former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
