Trump Uses Mamdani Meet to Reset Headlines

Washington: US President Donald Trump met New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday, holding a surprisingly cordial discussion despite their starkly different political ideologies.
Their first in-person encounter drew intense national attention and shifted the political narrative for the president at a time of mounting scrutiny.
Trump softens tone, shifts headlines
The biggest political gain for Trump came in the form of a tone shift. Weeks after dismissing Mamdani as a “100% Communist Lunatic,” Trump praised the incoming mayor, calling him “Mr Mayor” and predicting his success in leading New York City.
“We agree on a lot more than I would have thought,” Trump told reporters, smiling broadly during their televised Oval Office appearance.
The president’s warmer rhetoric helped steer headlines away from a string of damaging stories tied to documents related to the late Jeffrey Epstein.
With his approval ratings under pressure and several policy proposals stalling, the meeting allowed Trump to project focus and unity at a politically opportune moment.
Affordability at the centre of talks
Both Trump and Mamdani said their private conversation centred on cost-of-living challenges — a defining issue of Mamdani’s mayoral campaign and a growing national concern. Trump stressed lowering grocery and housing prices, while Mamdani highlighted feedback from voters, including some who also supported Trump.
“Some of his ideas are the same ideas I have,” Trump said, adding that affordability would remain a top White House priority heading into next year’s midterm elections.
Mamdani emphasised that many Trump supporters in New York voiced concerns about rising living costs. By focusing on economic issues, the two avoided their major policy disagreements, including immigration and the war in Gaza.
Mamdani holds his ground
Despite the president’s overtures, Mamdani refrained from offering reciprocal praise, maintaining a respectful but firm tone. He reiterated concerns about Trump’s immigration policies and their implications for New York City, while remaining composed during joint questioning by a press pool heavy with New York and right-leaning reporters.
At one point, Trump publicly defended Mamdani over a question about travelling by plane rather than train, saying a flight was simply the fastest option to Washington.
A display of unexpected warmth
The body language between the two leaders was notably friendly, contrasting sharply with Trump’s often combative meetings with political opponents and foreign leaders. Trump repeatedly shook Mamdani’s hand, patted his arm, and playfully tapped him during the press availability.
Trump sat at his desk in a red tie, while Mamdani stood beside him in a blue one — colours reflecting their respective political affiliations. The president struck an elder-statesman tone while the mayor-elect adopted a calm, attentive posture.
Trump gravitates toward “winners”
The meeting ended on a surprisingly affable note. Trump suggested Mamdani might ultimately shift his views on some issues and said the mayor-elect could “surprise some conservative people.”
Trump has long demonstrated admiration for political and athletic victories, often inviting successful figures to the White House. Hosting Mamdani, who defeated establishment candidates including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, fit that pattern.
As fellow New Yorkers — Trump raised in Queens, Mamdani currently residing there as the borough’s first-ever mayor — the president hinted at a sense of kinship.
“Being the mayor of New York City is a big deal,” Trump said. “I love New York City,” he added.
