Islamabad: The ongoing 10-day Lok Mela is not just a celebration of Pakistan’s diverse cultures—it is also creating entertainment and economic opportunities for artisans across the country, according to a Punjab-based crafts seller.

Every province has set up its own intricately designed cultural pavilion, showcasing indigenous heritage through vibrant displays. Among the many attractions, traditional khusa footwear has emerged as a crowd favorite, drawing both local and foreign visitors. “I love buying khusa at the Mela. The designs are unique, handmade, and durable,” said one visitor while purchasing a pair.

Dozens of stalls feature the rich textile and craft traditions of Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Visitors are particularly drawn to colorful hand-made wool shawls, embroidered khusa, Ajrak, block-printed fabrics, and traditional dresses.

A foreign attendee praised the intricate embroidery of Sindhi and Gilgit-Baltistan shawls, noting their comfortable fabrics and appealing designs.

For artisans, the Mela is more than a cultural display—it’s a vital source of income. “The Mela provides economic opportunities for poor and underprivileged craftsmen,” said a female customer, adding that she was purchasing a traditional Pashto dress for her daughters, impressed by its vibrant colors and detailed work.

At one Punjabi stall, the seller explained that khusa shoes are mostly crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, with uppers decorated with fabric, shells, mirrors, beads, and gems. Some designs feature fine thread embroidery, while others are enhanced with zari thread. He expressed satisfaction with the steady sales, especially among female shoppers.

Women at the Mela noted that khusa shoes are available in a wide variety of colors and designs. “The soft leather makes them comfortable, and the intricate embroidery with beads and sequins adds elegance,” said an elderly visitor.

Affordable prices and fashionable designs make these traditional shoes a key highlight of the Lok Mela, attracting shoppers eager to take home a piece of Pakistan’s heritage.
