Lahore: The persistent toxic smog engulfing Lahore has caused a sharp rise in respiratory and health issues, with city hospitals reporting over 5,000 asthma cases in the past week.
Hospitals across Lahore are overwhelmed as the surge in patients with respiratory problems, skin conditions, and eye irritations strains medical facilities. Reports from major hospitals indicate a significant increase in cases of asthma, pneumonia, and chest infections, particularly among adults and children.
Mayo Hospital treated more than 1,500 asthma patients, Jinnah Hospital around 1,000, while Ganga Ram Hospital registered over 1,000 cases. Both Services Hospital and General Hospital reported approximately 1,500 cases each.
Health experts, including pulmonologists, warn that the toxic smog is spiraling out of control, severely impacting public health. They highlighted the heightened risks for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma and heart disease due to the deteriorating air quality.
“Smog is acting as a silent health emergency, exacerbating respiratory and skin diseases,” said a senior pulmonologist. He urged citizens to minimize outdoor activities, use protective masks, and ensure proper ventilation indoors to safeguard their health.
Experts also emphasized the importance of collective efforts to address air pollution, urging authorities to intensify anti-smog measures and calling on residents to avoid burning waste or engaging in activities that contribute to pollution.
As smog continues to affect millions, public awareness and adherence to health precautions are critical to mitigate its health impacts.
