Top-order Collapse Costs Bangladesh Defeat to Sri Lanka

Islamabad: Bangladesh batter Jaker Ali admitted that the team’s top-order failure proved costly in their second Asia Cup group match against Sri Lanka, where they slumped to a six-wicket defeat.
Sri Lanka comfortably chased down the modest target of 140 in just 14.4 overs after Bangladesh’s innings got off to a disastrous start. For the first time in T20Is, the Tigers lost two wickets without scoring a run and were soon reduced to 53 for 5.
A fighting unbeaten 86-run stand between Jaker Ali (41*) and Shamim Patowary (42*) provided some resistance, but it was not enough to trouble the islanders.
“The openers and No. 3 batter are very important for our team. They don’t need to hit boundaries every ball in the PowerPlay—rotating strike is also crucial,” Jaker told reporters after the game. “Together we batted poorly, and together we lost.”
He also highlighted the impact of wind conditions on batting strategy: “You cannot hit both sides freely. A proper start would have made these things less risky. Without wickets in hand, you can’t take too many chances.”
Despite the setback, Jaker insisted Bangladesh still have hope of progressing beyond the group stage. The Tigers’ qualification chances hinge on beating Afghanistan, while also requiring Sri Lanka to defeat both Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
“There is no question of giving up. We came here to be champions, not just to participate. Losing one game does not mean losing hope,” Jaker added.
