Peshawar: Humayun Khan, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Prisons, has ordered the removal of several senior officers at District Jail Timergara in response to critical complaints raised by inmates regarding poor conditions at the facility.
The decision came after a surprise inspection by Humayun Khan, who identified several alarming issues, including poor cleanliness, substandard food, and allegations of mistreatment of prisoners.
During the inspection, the Special Assistant personally met with inmates, who voiced their concerns over inhumane treatment, inadequate food, and unsatisfactory hygiene standards.
In light of these findings, Humayun Khan issued immediate orders for the removal of the Jail Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and Assistant Superintendent, directing all senior staff to report to the Directorate of Prisons for further action.
“The conditions at District Jail Timergara are unacceptable, and we will ensure that no one, including prisoners, is subjected to inhumane treatment,” Khan said, adding that reforms would be implemented across the province to improve prison conditions.
The Special Assistant also conducted thorough inspections of the jail’s food supply, cleanliness in the prison kitchen, and healthcare facilities in the jail hospital. His findings raised serious concerns about the management of the facility, prompting the immediate transfer of staff.
Humayun Khan further emphasized that surprise inspections would be a regular practice in all provincial jails, and strict action would be taken against those failing to meet their responsibilities.
Feroz Shah, the Chairman of the Tehsil, accompanied Khan during the visit and expressed his full support for the measures to address the issues at the jail.
