The Great Flood: Why the Mother Had to Relive the Flood

Islamabad: Long before the world drowned, humanity already knew its time was running out.

Scientists across the globe had discovered that a massive asteroid was on a collision course with Earth—an extinction-level event capable of erasing civilization, just as a similar impact once wiped out the dinosaurs.

 To prevent the end of humanity, researchers laid the groundwork for an ambitious project: the Darwin Center, named after Charles Darwin, envisioned as the birthplace of the next stage of human evolution.

Their solution was radical. No one knew what Earth would look like after the asteroid shattered into tens of thousands of fragments and triggered the Great Flood. Sending ordinary humans back into such an unknown world seemed reckless.

Instead, the Darwin Center set out to create a new race—synthetic humans, artificial persons with perfect bodies, intelligence, and the ability to reproduce.

The androids were flawless in form, but something essential was missing. They could think, calculate, and survive—but they could not feel. And without emotion, they could never truly be human.

That is where Chief Researcher Im Hyeon-mo and her junior colleague Dr. Gu An-na entered the story.

Five years before the flood, the two women were assigned the most crucial task of all: creating an Emotion Engine, an AI system capable of replicating genuine human emotions.

To test it, the Darwin Center approved an unprecedented experiment—two android children. Yu-jin was raised by Hyeon-mo, while An-na took Ja-in into her care, raising him as her own.

The experiment succeeded. The children laughed, cried, bonded, and grew—just like human kids. Encouraged by the results, the researchers prepared for the next step: replicating maternal emotion itself, creating a perfect mother.

But the asteroid struck before that final phase could be completed.

As chaos engulfed the planet, the Darwin Center activated its contingency plans. A space facility—the Isabela Lab—had already been established in orbit to manufacture synthetic human bodies. What it lacked was the completed Emotion Engine.

Rescue teams were dispatched. Hyeon-mo and Yu-jin were meant to be evacuated first, but Hyeon-mo vanished, likely drowned in the rising floodwaters. The next target was An-na—the last surviving researcher capable of completing the project—and Ja-in, the only living vessel of the Emotion Engine.

That is where The Great Flood begins.

Son Hee-jo arrives at An-na’s apartment with orders to escort her and Ja-in to safety. Their destination: Isabela Lab. But fate intervenes once more. During their escape, debris from the asteroid strikes the space shuttle’s engine. An-na is gravely wounded. She does not survive.

Yet even in her final moments, she refuses to let humanity die with her.

With her last breath, An-na asks Dr. Lee Hwi-so, the director of Isabela Lab, to extract the memories of both herself and Ja-in and upload them into the Emotion Engine Core Simulator. Through this, she hopes to complete the one thing she never could in life: create a true mother capable of saving the human race.

This experiment becomes known as Project Newman-78. Ja-in, meanwhile, is catalogued as Project Newman-77.

The Simulation

The film’s most unsettling revelation is that everything shown in its second half—the apartment building, the flood, the endless struggle—was never real. It was a simulation built entirely from An-na’s memories.

Before dying, An-na had proposed a plan. In the simulation, she would exist as a mother searching for her missing child. Each time she failed, the simulation would reset. With every run, the AI would learn—absorbing grief, fear, hope, sacrifice, and love.

Every time An-na awakens, a new number is printed on her shirt, marking how many times the experiment has been repeated. Each floor of the flooded apartment becomes a trial. She encounters faces from her past, moral dilemmas, and moments of human suffering. Like a video game campaign, every challenge refines her emotional intelligence.

Why a missing child?

Because that was An-na’s deepest unresolved failure.

In life, she doubted herself as a mother. Ja-in was not born from her body—he was grown in a lab. At first, he was an experiment. Love came later, hesitantly. On her final day, she had left him waiting, distracted by work and the end of the world.

The simulation turns that guilt into purpose.

Each loop forces An-na to grow more empathetic. She helps a frightened child trapped in an elevator. She protects residents from violent looters. She comforts a pregnant woman near the top floors. With every iteration, she becomes more human than before.

The Truth She Forgot

After 7,993 simulations, An-na finally understands why Ja-in disappeared.

Throughout the film, Ja-in had been trying to reach her—showing her drawings, seeking attention. She ignored them. In the final iteration, she looks at the drawings and realizes the truth: they were a map.

Before the Dev Team removed the Emotion Engine from Ja-in’s body, the real An-na had whispered instructions to him—hide on the rooftop, wait for her, trust that she would come back.

That memory existed—but it was deliberately removed from the digital An-na’s consciousness.

The simulation merged both perspectives—mother and child—but withheld the answer until An-na learned to truly see her son. Only by understanding his emotional needs could she unlock the truth.

Even Hee-jo’s story reflects this lesson. He, too, was abandoned by a mother who promised to return but never did—a wound that shaped his bitterness. An-na realizes that failing a child does not just harm one life; it fractures humanity itself.

Breaking the Loop

After 21,499 attempts, An-na finds Ja-in on the rooftop.

She rescues him. As they prepare to escape, members of the Dev Team attempt to separate them once again. But this time, An-na refuses. She fights back, clings to her child, and leaps into the water with him—choosing love over compliance.

That act breaks the time loop.

The simulation ends. The Emotion Engine is complete.

In the final moments, pods descend toward Earth—carrying synthetic mothers and children. Among them are versions of An-na and Ja-in, reborn as androids infused with real human emotion.

So, is the mother dead?

In body, yes.

But in memory, emotion, and purpose—she lives on.

An-na and Ja-in return to Earth not as survivors of the old world, but as the architects of a new one, carrying with them the one thing humanity needs most to begin again: empathy.
