Thanks to Chloe Kelly: England beat Germany to win Euro 2022 final

London: England won their first major football trophy since 1966 when England’s team won the World Cup against Brazil.  The final was watched by a full capacity crowd at England’s national Wembley stadium in London. This was a record-breaking attendance for a women’s football fixture in the UK.

At the end of the normal 90 minutes, both teams were locked at 1-1. The winning goal came in the extra time from the Manchester City winger Chloe Kelly and in doing so she etched her name into English football folklore with just 10 minutes of additional time remaining. The other goal in the 2-1 victory was scored by Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Ella Toone. Thus a very special moment of pride for the city of Manchester.

The Queen sent a special message to the winning team:

“My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships.

“It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff.

“The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.

“You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations.

“It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.”

This has to be one of the most significant achievements for women’s football in England, considering that it was given a professional status 4 years ago.

Well deserved congratulations to the players and the management.
