Islamabad: A study conducted in America has shown that excessive consumption of sweet foods and drinking sugary drinks can cause kidney stones.
Kidney stones are a painful disease that is not easy to treat because they can recur.
There can be many reasons for kidney stones, like not drinking enough water, the presence of kidney stones in the family, certain foods especially high in salt and calcium, obesity, diabetes, stomach diseases, surgery, etc.
Kidney stones can affect any part of the urinary tract and their passage can be quite painful.
It is estimated that one out of every 11 people in the world suffers from kidney stones and many of these people may develop kidney stones even after the stone has been removed.
According to research published in the medical website ‘Frontiers Nutrition’, American experts researched more than 28 thousand people for 11 years.
Men and women were included in the study, and all volunteers had complaints of kidney stones. The experts examined all the individuals, including their nutritional status and other medical symptoms, and listened to their complaints.
The research showed that people who ate and drank more than 25 per cent of their diet had an 88 per cent increased chance of developing kidney stones.
The research mentioned that consumption of foods and drinks that contain added sugar increases the chances of developing kidney stones. For example, cold drinks and other similar beverages, ice cream, cakes, and other similar foods that contain added sugar during their preparation
According to experts, since sugar and sweets are the cause of weight gain along with blood pressure and sugar, it is possible that all these things together facilitate the formation of kidney stones.
Experts urged more research on the matter, agreeing that excess sugar increases the amount of calcium in the urine, potentially leading to the formation of kidney stones.
