Experts Highlight Alarming Trends in Children’s Mental Health
News Desk
Islamabad: Globally, 10 per cent of children and adolescents experience a mental disorder but the majority of them do not seek help or receive care. Moreover, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15–19-year-old, according to World Health Organization (WHO).
In recent years, the surge in children’s mental health disorders has cast a spotlight on a pressing issue that often goes unnoticed. Despite the gravity of the situation, society has failed to provide adequate attention and support, leaving countless children struggling in silence.
The alarming surge in mental health disorders among youth calls for immediate intervention, according to mental health experts.
“Understanding a child’s personality physiologically, mentally and physically by giving them a conducive approach provides a protective environment, making them more successful and feel like useful citizens of society,” said Mehfooz Bachpan (Child Protection Campaign) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bushra Iqbal.
Familial Support Is Crucial
Experts in the field emphasise the critical role parents play in supporting children’s mental health. Parents play a crucial role in shaping their children’s mental well-being. Parents can develop a loving environment that encourages emotional resilience by actively engaging with their kids, paying attention to their activities, and responding to their thoughts and worries.
Psychologist Sobia Iftikhar said that dealing with children’s mental health difficulties, including psychotherapy, family training therapies, stress management, and behavioural management, greatly benefits from family and couple therapy.
Open and supportive conversations at home can help alleviate fears and anxieties that contribute to mental health disorders, Sobia added.
Monitoring children’s emotional well-being requires frequent check-ins. Parents can normalise any concerns or anxieties arising from their environment by being actively supportive and communicative with their children as their emotions and moods change.
Internal pressures, such as academic performance stress, excessive expectations, and constant comparisons, can significantly impact a child’s mental health. Creating a supportive environment that fosters individuality and encourages a balanced approach can help alleviate these pressures. Parents should promote a healthy perspective on achievements and ensure children have opportunities for relaxation and self-care.
Addressing name-calling and bullying and fostering a culture of respect within schools and communities is essential. By educating children on the importance of kindness and empathy, we can create inclusive environments where all children feel safe and valued.
The government’s and community’s efforts are crucial in providing accessible mental health resources and interventions. Prioritising children’s mental health alongside their physical health should be a cornerstone of public health policies.
In order to maintain a good mental state, people should reinforce the positive aspects of their lives, such as participating in activities, spending time with family and friends, and developing interests.
Experts stated that by acknowledging and addressing their hidden struggles, we can pave the way for a brighter future where youth well-being takes centre stage. It is the collective responsibility of parents, communities, and policymakers to address this issue and prioritise the well-being of our children.
