Islamabad: “Superman,” the newest high-budget action film featuring the legendary DC superhero, soared to the top of the North American box office during its opening weekend, earning an impressive $122 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Directed by James Gunn and produced by Warner Bros. and DC Studios, the film stars rising talent David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as Lois Lane, his iconic love interest.

“This is an excellent domestic debut for the seventh installment in a superhero saga that’s been adapted for over 75 years,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. “Gunn avoided relying on major stars—here, strong storytelling and direction take center stage.”

In its second week, “Jurassic World: Rebirth” dropped to second place with $40 million. The Universal blockbuster, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, is set on a deserted island research facility once tied to the original Jurassic Park, now filled with secrets and mutated dinosaurs.

“F1: The Movie,” a collaboration between Apple and Warner Bros. starring Brad Pitt as a former Formula One driver making a comeback, took third place with $13 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” claimed fourth with $7.8 million.

“It’s summer, and audiences are drawn to bold, visually spectacular films like ‘Superman,’ ‘Jurassic,’ ‘F1,’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’” Gross noted. “Moviegoers want to be swept away—and that’s exactly what they’re getting.”

Rounding out the top five was Disney/Pixar’s latest original, “Elio,” about a boy mistaken by aliens as Earth’s ambassador, which earned $3.9 million.

The rest of the top 10 included:

  • “28 Years Later” – $2.73 million
  • “Lilo & Stitch” – $2.7 million
  • “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” – $1.5 million
  • “M3GAN 2.0” – $1.4 million

“Materialists” – $720,000
