Pune, India: Washington Sundar made a stunning return to India’s Test side, claiming seven wickets as New Zealand was bowled out for 259 on day one of the second Test.

India, at stumps, stood at 16-1, with captain Rohit Sharma dismissed for a duck by Tim Southee. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill were unbeaten on six and 10, respectively, with India trailing by 243 runs.

New Zealand’s Devon Conway (76) and Rachin Ravindra (65) anchored their innings after captain Tom Latham won the toss. However, Sundar’s brilliant 7-59 and Ravichandran Ashwin’s 3-64 spun the Black Caps out in 79.1 overs.

The pitch is expected to turn further, with India aiming to level the three-match series after their opening defeat in Bengaluru. Sundar’s seven-wicket haul marked his first five-wicket performance in his five-match Test career.
