Study: 60% of Adults to Be Obese by 2050 Without Action

Islamabad: A new study published in The Lancet predicts that nearly 60% of adults and a third of children worldwide will be overweight or obese by 2050 unless urgent action is taken.
The research, based on data from 204 countries, highlights a concerning global health trend, with the number of overweight or obese individuals rising from 929 million in 1990 to 2.6 billion in 2021.
If trends continue, the number of affected adults is expected to soar to 3.8 billion by 2050. The study warns of significant strain on global healthcare systems, with a growing elderly population among the obese.
The research also foresees a sharp increase in obesity rates among children, particularly in regions like North Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Experts stress the need for stronger political commitment to transforming diets and promoting healthier environments. The study underscores the critical importance of addressing nutrition, physical activity, and food systems to combat this global epidemic.
