Tamil Nadu: Southern India braced for impact as Cyclone Fengal advanced towards Tamil Nadu, prompting the evacuation of hundreds and the closure of schools and colleges across multiple districts.

The powerful storm, with winds expected to reach 70-80 km/h (43-50 mph), is set to make landfall on Saturday afternoon, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. Authorities have issued flood warnings for low-lying coastal areas, predicting surging waves of up to one meter (three feet).

Fishermen have been urged to avoid venturing into the sea.

At least 471 people have been relocated to relief camps in preparation for the storm, while schools and colleges remain shuttered to ensure public safety, Economic Times reported.

A Climate-Driven Threat

Cyclone Fengal, which skirted Sri Lanka earlier this week claiming 12 lives, including six children, underscores the growing ferocity of storms linked to climate change.

Scientists attribute their intensification to warming ocean surfaces, which fuel stronger winds and heavier rainfall, and to the atmosphere’s increased capacity to retain moisture.

Despite these alarming trends, advancements in weather forecasting and evacuation strategies have significantly reduced cyclone-related fatalities, showcasing the power of preparedness in the face of climate crises.

Spotlight on Resilience

While Cyclone Fengal serves as a grim reminder of nature’s might, it also highlights humanity’s capacity to adapt and protect vulnerable communities through proactive planning and rapid response mechanisms.
