Spotify Turns Social with New In-App Messages

News Desk

Islamabad: Spotify has unveiled a new in-app Messages feature that lets listeners share songs, playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the platform, a move analysts say could deepen user engagement at a time when the company is under pressure to boost growth.

The feature, rolling out globally this week for both Free and Premium users, creates a dedicated space inside Spotify for one-on-one conversations—something previously limited to third-party platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, or TikTok.

Users will now be able to send tracks, react with emojis, reply with text, and manage requests or block accounts from within the app. Spotify will also recommend potential contacts based on past collaborations such as Blends, Jams, or family plan connections.

Industry observers note that the new tool positions Spotify not just as a streaming service but also as a social hub for music discovery, offering artists and podcasters an additional channel for organic promotion through word-of-mouth.

“Messages is designed to make sharing more personal while helping emerging creators get noticed,” the company said, adding that conversations will be encrypted and monitored for harmful or unlawful content.

The release comes just weeks after Spotify announced another subscription price increase, underscoring the platform’s dual strategy of raising revenue while keeping users locked in through deeper engagement. More features are expected in the coming months as part of what Spotify described as “a first step” toward integrating social interaction into its ecosystem.
