Special Committee to Investigate Commissioner’s Allegations

Islamabad: The Election Commission’s Special Committee will commence the inquiry into allegations against former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatta today (Monday).

Sources reveal that the special committee will document statements from returning officers representing 13 National Assembly constituencies and 26 Provincial Assembly constituencies within Rawalpindi Division.

Additionally, insiders suggest that the committee meeting will include a decision to request the transcript of the former Commissioner Rawalpindi’s statement from the Chairman of the Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

According to the details, on February 17, Commissioner Rawalpindi disclosed that he, appointed by the caretaker government to oversee the elections, resigned citing an inability to conduct the election properly. Allegations surfaced as he claimed the results of 13 National Assembly constituencies were manipulated, leading to the victory of losing candidates.

According to Commissioner Rawalpindi, 13 individuals were wrongly declared defeated, including 70,000 leaders. He accused his subordinates of reluctance and mentioned presiding officers crying before him.

In a distressing revelation, Liaquat Ali Chatta expressed a desire for his own execution at Kachhari Chowk, Rawalpindi, and called for the punishment of the Election Commissioner and others involved. He emphasized the avoidance of a repeat of the 1971 incident and revealed attempting suicide after Fajr prayer.

Following these serious allegations, the Election Commission of Pakistan responded by forming a high-level committee to thoroughly investigate the claims.
