Diagnostic Gaps Persist in South Punjab DHQ Hospitals

Multan: South Punjab’s District Headquarters (DHQ) hospitals are struggling to provide essential diagnostic services such as X-rays and MRIs, particularly during evening shifts, due to staff shortages and inadequate resources.
The lack of modern emergency facilities, including neurosurgical units, is putting head-injury patients at serious risk, often forcing referrals to larger hospitals like Nishtar Hospital in Multan and Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital. This delay not only endangers lives but also adds significant financial burden on patients, many of whom rely on motorcycles for transportation.
Hospitals in Vehari, Khanewal, Rajanpur, and Layyah, among others, reportedly lack the necessary expertise to handle critical emergencies, increasing pressure on major medical centers. Local residents, including Shoukat Khan, Muhammad Asif, Shahid Razzaq, and others, have highlighted the high costs and delays involved in traveling for treatment.
Officials said work is underway on larger hospitals, including Nishtar II, and funds have been allocated to upgrade DHQ facilities across the region. However, citizens emphasize the urgent need for investment in neurosurgical services, diagnostic equipment, and trained medical staff to meet South Punjab’s growing healthcare demands.
“The lives of patients are at stake, and financial strain on vulnerable communities will continue unless swift action is taken,” residents warned, calling on the government to address the crisis promptly.
