South Korea Appoints Artificial Intelligence News Anchors
News Desk
Islamabad: In South Korea’s Jeju Island, the provincial government has made a significant move by appointing a virtual news anchor powered by artificial intelligence for a weekly YouTube program.
This decision reflects a growing trend worldwide where virtual news anchors and presenters are being utilized by various entities, including government agencies, as cost-effective substitutes for human hosts.
Jana, the virtual news anchor in question, appears to be highly proficient and experienced despite her youthful appearance.
However, this is because she is not a real individual but rather a computer-generated virtual avatar managed by a private contractor.
Moreover, the news content that Jana presents on screen is also generated by AI language models such as ChatGPT, further exemplifying the integration of artificial intelligence into the news broadcasting process.
Remarkably, the monthly cost associated with this virtual news anchor option, including the news generation script, amounts to only 600,000 Korean won, equivalent to approximately 450 US dollars.
This demonstrates the considerable cost savings achievable through the adoption of AI-powered virtual anchors compared to employing human hosts.
