South Africa halted India’s 12-match winning run in ICC T20 World Cups with a commanding 76-run victory, successfully defending 187 in a high-stakes encounter that could have major net run rate implications.

After opting to bat first, South Africa recovered from a precarious 20 for 3 to post 187 for 7, powered by a counterattacking 63 from David Miller and a brisk 45 from Dewald Brevis. In reply, India were bundled out for 111 despite Shivam Dube’s 42, as Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj led a disciplined bowling effort.

South Africa Recover After Early Blows

The decision to bat appeared questionable when Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh tore through the top order. Bumrah produced a masterclass with figures of 3 for 15, removing Quinton de Kock with a seaming delivery and dismissing Ryan Rickelton with a deceptive slower off-cutter. Arshdeep continued his dominance over Aiden Markram, dismissing him yet again to leave South Africa reeling.

At 20 for 3, Miller and Brevis launched a calculated counterattack. Recognizing improving batting conditions despite early assistance for seamers, the pair targeted India’s spinners and punished loose deliveries. Miller raced to 32 off 17 balls, striking cleanly down the ground, while Brevis showcased flair, including a no-look six off Varun Chakravarthy.

India’s discipline wavered at key moments. No-balls from Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube resulted in costly free hits, both dispatched for six by Miller, who brought up his half-century in style. Brevis contributed 45 off 29 before falling to Dube, but the momentum had firmly shifted.

Tristan Stubbs provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls. Although Bumrah returned to restrict the scoring at the death, Stubbs struck two sixes off the final over to lift South Africa to a competitive total.

Clinical Bowling Seals the Win

Despite dew setting in and conditions easing for batting, South Africa executed their bowling plans with precision. Markram opened the bowling and dismissed Ishan Kishan for a duck, setting the tone. Jansen struck with his first delivery, while Lungi Ngidi’s slower balls proved difficult to score off.

India struggled to build partnerships, with the highest stand limited to just 35. Maharaj played a key role, claiming 3 for 24 and contributing to three boundary catches in a single over. South Africa’s fielding was sharp throughout, highlighted by a sensational catch from Corbin Bosch after colliding with Maharaj.

India’s top order faltered under pressure. Abhishek Sharma’s aggressive start was cut short by Jansen’s knuckle ball, while Suryakumar Yadav laboured to 18 off 22 balls before falling with the required rate soaring. Washington Sundar, promoted up the order, failed to make an impact.

Jansen finished with 4 for 22 as India were dismissed for 111, handing South Africa a comprehensive victory.

Statement Win

The win not only ended India’s impressive streak but also served as redemption for South Africa, who had fallen short against the same opponents in the previous World Cup final. With both tactical acumen and disciplined execution, South Africa delivered one of their most complete performances of the tournament.
