Hamlton: South Africa produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat New Zealand by 18 runs in the second T20I on Tuesday, leveling the five-match series 1-1.

A blistering half-century from Tazmin Brits and a four-wicket haul by Ayabonga Khaka led the visitors to a comprehensive win, supported by key contributions from Laura Wolvaardt, Sune Luus, Kayla Reyneke and Nonkululeko Mlaba.

Batting first, South Africa posted a competitive 177 for 5. Brits set the tone with a rapid 35-ball 53, while Luus provided early momentum with a 21-ball 31. Wolvaardt anchored the innings with an unbeaten 41 off 33 balls.

Late fireworks came from Reyneke, who smashed an unbeaten 28 off just nine deliveries, including three consecutive sixes in the final over, helping South Africa finish strongly.

For New Zealand, Amelia Kerr was the standout performer with both bat and ball, returning figures of 2 for 29 and scoring a quick 32. Jess Kerr also picked up two wickets.

Chasing 178, New Zealand were restricted to 159 despite a promising start. Early wickets dented their chase, with Khaka removing key batters to finish with figures of 4 for 27. Mlaba provided strong support with 3 for 27, keeping the pressure on throughout the innings.

Although Amelia Kerr’s aggressive knock briefly threatened to shift momentum, her dismissal in the seventh over proved a turning point. A late surge by Izzy Sharp offered a glimmer of hope, but disciplined bowling and sharp fielding from South Africa ensured New Zealand fell short.

Reyneke was named Player of the Match for her explosive cameo, which proved crucial in setting up the victory.

The result sees South Africa bounce back strongly to level the series, setting up an exciting contest in the remaining matches.
