Sony Acquires Film Rights to Labubu Plush Doll Line

News Desk

Los Angeles: Sony Pictures has secured the feature film rights to Labubu, the hugely popular Chinese designer toy, as the studio moves into early development of a potential movie adaptation.

The project is still in its infancy, with no director, writer, or production team attached, and it remains undecided whether the film will be live-action or animated.

Labubu, created in 2015 by Hong Kong-born, Europe-based artist Kasing Lung, is part of Lung’s The Monsters series, which draws inspiration from Nordic folklore. Initially produced by How2Work, the toy line achieved global recognition after Chinese retailer Pop Mart acquired it in 2019.

What began as a cult favorite in East and Southeast Asia has become a worldwide phenomenon, with rare Labubu figures fetching six-figure sums on the black market in the United States. Pop Mart’s signature “eyeless box” strategy, in which buyers only discover which figure they received upon opening, has contributed to the collectibles’ scarcity and high demand.

Celebrity endorsements have also boosted Labubu’s profile, with Blackpink’s Lisa spotted wearing accessories featuring the character.

According to Pop Mart’s 2024 report, the Monsters line generated $430 million, accounting for 23.3% of annual revenue. The first half of 2025 saw the line bring in $670 million, roughly 35% of Pop Mart’s total revenue, underscoring the brand’s growing global influence.

Sony’s acquisition signals the studio’s intent to capitalize on the Labubu craze, though details on casting, release, and production timeline remain unannounced.
