Social Media Influence Drives Up Wedding Costs

Islamabad: The growing influence of social and digital media has significantly transformed wedding traditions in Pakistan, making them more extravagant and expensive.

What was once a simple celebration has now evolved into a lavish, week-long affair with multiple events and excessive spending.

The increasing popularity of elaborate pre-wedding traditions, such as “Bride-to-Be” parties, Mehndi nights, and Dholki celebrations, is largely influenced by TV dramas and social media trends set by celebrities and influencers.

These events, characterized by extravagant decorations, lavish food, and high-end entertainment, have become an integral part of modern Pakistani weddings.

According to wedding planners and industry experts, the average cost of a wedding in Pakistan has soared, with some families spending over Rs five million on a single event.

Wedding planner Imtiaz Niazi noted that the wedding industry in Pakistan has become a multi-billion-rupee market, with families willing to spend exorbitant amounts to make their celebrations stand out.

“Many do it not just for their families but also to gain popularity and social media validation through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok,” he added.

However, not everyone welcomes this trend of excess. Many believe that the increasing focus on materialism has overshadowed the true essence of marriage.

“The focus should be on the union of two people, not on how much money we can spend on decorations and food,” said Mrs. Khan, head of a marriage bureau. She pointed out that these extravagant traditions have created a culture of competition, pressuring families to outdo one another in opulence.

She emphasized that the growing obsession with elaborate celebrations has shifted attention away from the true meaning of marriage. “It’s time to reassess our priorities and return to the simplicity and elegance of traditional wedding celebrations,” she urged.
