Washington: A powerful snowstorm sweeping across the southern United States has forced the cancellation of more than 2,400 flights, causing widespread travel disruption at major airports.

At Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport, more than 600 flights were cancelled on Saturday evening. An additional 50 flights to and from Atlanta were called off in the early hours of Sunday due to deteriorating weather conditions.

The US National Weather Service warned that an intensifying coastal storm would bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to parts of North and South Carolina. The storm is also accompanied by a powerful polar air mass, which is expected to push temperatures well below freezing across large parts of the region.
