Snow, Rain to Continue in KP Until Feb 4: Met Office

News Desk

Peshawar: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast that a spell of western weather system will continue to affect Khyber Pakhtunkhwa intermittently until February 4, bringing snowfall to upper regions and rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the plains.

According to the Met Office, multiple spells of intense cold and snowfall are expected in northern and mountainous districts, including Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat (Kalam and Malam Jabba), Shangla, Kohistan, and Battagram.

In the Hazara Division, areas such as Mansehra, Naran, Kaghan, and the Galiyat region, along with adjoining areas of Murree, are also likely to experience intermittent snowfall.

The PMD warned that temperatures in high-altitude areas could drop below minus 5 degrees Celsius, potentially disrupting road traffic and daily life.

In central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, and Swabi, the weather is expected to remain cloudy, with rain and thunderstorms likely between February 1 and 3. The department also indicated the possibility of isolated hailstorms in some areas.

Southern districts, including Kohat, Bannu, and Karak, are likely to receive light rainfall, while Dera Ismail Khan is expected to remain mostly dry, although cold conditions will persist.

In the tribal districts, snowfall is forecast in mountainous areas of Khyber (Tirah Valley), Mohmand, and Kurram, while rain is expected in the adjoining plains.

The Met Office has issued advisories warning of possible landslides due to continuous rain and snowfall, particularly along the Karakoram Highway and vulnerable routes in Swat and other hilly regions.

It also cautioned that dense fog may form during morning hours in plain areas, including Peshawar, Mardan, and Swabi, which could affect visibility and road travel.

Tourists planning to visit northern destinations such as Naran and Kalam have been advised to exercise caution, carry snow chains and warm clothing, and avoid night travel until February 4.

Authorities urged the public to stay updated with official weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
