Smog, Plastic Pollution Ravage Human Health, Ecosystem

Mirpur: Leading environmental experts, Dr Abdul Rasheed, Patron Chief of the UK-based World Environment Organization (Work Against Single Use Of Plastic, WASUP), and Lubana Majid, Ambassador of the Azad Jammu Kashmir Chapter of WASUP, raised alarm over the escalating dangers of plastic pollution and other environmental issues during a press conference at the Kashmir Press Club.

They specifically warned about the devastating effects of environmental pollution on human health, particularly in developing countries.

Dr Rasheed referred to plastic pollution as a “silent killer” that contaminates land and water, posing serious risks to human and livestock health.

He highlighted that plastic particles, which enter the human body through food and water, can lead to severe health issues such as cancer, heart disease, and hormonal disorders.

He pointed out that these effects are exacerbated in developing countries due to limited resources and weak environmental policies.

Lubana Majid, speaking on the growing threat of smog and greenhouse gas emissions, emphasized that these pollutants are wreaking havoc on both human health and the ecosystem. Respiratory diseases, asthma, and eye irritation are increasingly common due to smog, while global warming continues to accelerate, causing rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns.

Majid mentioned that WASUP’s Azad Jammu Kashmir Chapter had begun awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and community centers, with the goal of educating the younger generation about the urgent need for environmental protection.

She stressed the importance of public awareness, improved recycling systems, and the use of alternative materials to combat plastic pollution.

The experts called on the government to take immediate action, urging collaboration between the public and private sectors to fight environmental pollution and climate change.

They emphasized the need for strict environmental laws in developing countries, the establishment of better recycling systems, and the adoption of affordable, eco-friendly energy sources.

Dr Rasheed and Majid vowed that WASUP would continue to advocate for environmental protection and raise awareness at various forums to ensure a safer, healthier environment for future generations.
