Smog Disrupts Flight Operations in Sialkot

Sialkot: Severe smog and dense fog disrupted domestic and international flight schedules at Sialkot International Airport on Thursday.

According to a spokesperson, the adverse weather conditions necessitated changes in flight schedules. While one international flight was canceled, all other flights will operate in accordance with the revised timetable.

Anti-Smog Crackdown in Lahore

The Lahore Police, under the Anti-Smog Action Plan, have registered 212 cases and arrested 228 individuals this year for activities contributing to smog.

A spokesperson for the Lahore Police reported on Saturday that joint operations with the Transport Department resulted in fines amounting to over Rs. 18.4 million against offenders. These measures targeted vehicles and individuals responsible for environmental violations across the city.

During these operations, over 50,000 vehicles were inspected, with more than 4,000 fined for emitting excessive smoke.

Documents for over 4,000 vehicles were seized due to the lack of fitness certificates, and over 5,000 vehicles were impounded. Additionally, 1,900 vehicles were declared substandard for failing fitness checks.

The crackdown also targeted illegal burning activities contributing to air pollution. Police arrested: Eight individuals for burning fuel, tar coal, and carbon boards.

89 for burning construction materials.

18 for burning crop residue.

29 for burning tires, plastic, and shopping bags.

51 for illegal burning in factories.

33 for setting garbage on fire.

Lahore CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana emphasized strict enforcement of government-mandated smog control Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

He highlighted ongoing collaboration between police, district administration, Environment Protection Department, and Transport Department.

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority’s surveillance cameras are being utilized to monitor violations by smoke-emitting vehicles and industrial offenders. The CCPO reiterated the commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against smog SOP violations and urged citizens to report environmental offenses via the helpline 15.
