Sleep Paralysis: Superstitious Belief Or Reality?
News Desk
Islamabad: “Early in the morning, I was trying to get out of bed for school, but my body couldn’t move; my toes were paralysed. My mind was conscious, but I was unable to move. Finally, after about 15 seconds, I was able to get out of bed.”
Scientists are still trying to understand why people are not able to move while they are conscious during sleep. This condition is actually called ‘sleep paralysis’. It is a very frightening experience during sleep, which is a normal condition or process during which a person feels conscious but cannot move.
This process is considered by common people to be the influence of jinn on the affected person, but in reality, it is a disease.
Sleep paralysis often occurs either during sleep or when a person is about to wake up from sleep, during which the person feels intense pressure on his body, as if someone is holding him. suffocating, or a very hideous-looking creature perched on his body.
Sleep paralysis can have many causes, such as trauma, anxiety, and stress, often leading to sleep paralysis due to these causes.
According to a report from the BBC, scientists believe that this condition occurs during sleep when a person is sleeping for long hours.
According to health experts, during sleep, the human body goes through different stages. One of these stages is called ‘rapid eye movement’ (REM), in which dreams start coming after about one and a half to two hours. The senses lie still and observe the events in the mind.
Interestingly, during this process, our body is naturally paralysed, so that we do not harm ourselves during sleep. It is natural for the body to be paralysed, which is also a gift to us.
Colin Espy of the University of Oxford said, “It’s like sleepwalking; most people who go through this kind of condition don’t go to the doctor.”
It definitely becomes a topic of conversation.
According to the report, medical experts say that this condition is common when there is a lack of sleep, but the most common and useful solution for treating this condition is awareness, in which the affected people are told about its scientific causes. So that they know that there is no danger to them.
In more serious cases, medications can be used to treat the person’s anxiety.
