Islamabad: Six young men from Punjab were killed by gunfire in Iran while allegedly attempting to cross the border illegally on their way to Iraq, family sources said on Thursday.

Relatives claimed the victims were shot by security forces during the attempted border crossing. The group had reportedly entered Iran without valid travel documents as part of a plan to reach Iraq.

Two of the deceased were identified as Basit from Sahna and Ayaan from Malakwal, while the remaining four hailed from Gujranwala. Family members said the victims were aged between 17 and 25.

According to relatives, a human smuggler had lured the youths with false promises of employment abroad and persuaded them to undertake the journey without passports.

The group had left Pakistan about one and a half months ago and last contacted their families on December 19. Basit and Ayaan were reportedly the only sons of their parents.
