Siraj Injury Scare Jolts India Ahead of Super 8 South Africa Clash

Ahmedabad: The Indian cricket team is currently camped in Ahmedabad as it gears up for a high-stakes Super 8 clash against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 — a rematch of the 2024 final.
With a semi-final berth on the line, the encounter carries significant weight. However, India’s preparations were jolted by an injury scare involving pacer Mohammed Siraj.
According to multiple reports from the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday evening, Siraj was struck on his left knee by a powerful shot from Hardik Pandya during a training session. The fast bowler appeared to be in considerable discomfort and was seen hobbling out of the nets after the incident, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial fixture.
India have already dealt with several fitness and illness setbacks during the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah and Abhishek Sharma each missed a match due to illness, while Washington Sundar also battled health issues. Ahead of the tournament, Harshit Rana was ruled out with an injury, prompting Siraj’s late inclusion in the squad.
Siraj featured in India’s opening group-stage match against the USA and impressed with a three-wicket haul. However, in subsequent matches, the team management opted for Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh in the pace department, limiting Siraj’s opportunities.
Meanwhile, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has backed mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy as a key weapon in the team’s attack. Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Super 8 showdown against South Africa, Morkel described Varun as a consistent wicket-taking option.
“Varun is obviously a strike bowler for us. He’s done really well in the World Cup so far, even before the tournament. He’s a go-to guy for us alongside Bumrah and the other wicket-taking bowlers,” Morkel said.
However, Morkel stressed that Varun’s effectiveness depends on sustained pressure from the entire bowling unit. He highlighted the importance of collective effort, particularly support from spearhead Bumrah, in maintaining control and creating wicket-taking opportunities.
With fitness concerns lingering and a place in the semi-finals at stake, India will be hoping for positive news on Siraj’s condition as they prepare for one of their most important matches of the tournament.
