Sindh: As many as 100 gender-based violence (GBV) incidents were reported last year across Sindh, revealed Women Development Minister Shahina Sher Ali.

Addressing a session of the Sindh Assembly, Sher Ali also mentioned that there are 22 daycare centres in Sindh, with one of them located in Karachi.

Gender-based violence or violence against women and girls (VAWG), is a global pandemic that affects one in three women in their lifetime.

The numbers are staggering:

  • 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.
  • Globally, 7 per cent of women have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner.
  • Globally, as many as 38 per cent of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.
  • 200 million women have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting.

A National Commission of Human Rights (NCHR) report revealed that around 63,000 cases of GBV were reported in Pakistan over the past three years, with some 4,000 being reported in the first half of 2020 when lockdowns were imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus.
