Karachi: The Sindh government has declared Wednesday, May 28, as a public holiday across the province in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer, commemorating Pakistan’s successful nuclear tests conducted in 1998.
According to an official notification issued by the Chief Secretary Sindh on Monday, all government offices, provincial departments, autonomous bodies, and local municipal councils will remain closed on the day.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has also announced the suspension of trading activities on May 28, aligning with the government’s decision. “All concerned are hereby informed that Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited will remain closed on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, being a public holiday declared by the Government of Pakistan on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer,” read the official notice from the PSX.
Youm-e-Takbeer marks the day when Pakistan carried out its nuclear tests in Chagai, Balochistan, on May 28, 1998, in response to India’s nuclear detonations earlier that month. The tests elevated Pakistan’s status as the first Muslim-majority country and the seventh nation globally to possess nuclear capabilities.
The day is remembered with pride and patriotism across the country as a symbol of national strength and sovereignty.
