Sheikh Hasina to Return to Dhaka Once Elections Are Scheduled
News Desk
Islamabad: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina plans to return to her country once the new caretaker government decides to schedule elections, as reported by her son.
It is uncertain whether she will seek office again. Hasina fled to India on Monday after enduring weeks of intense protests that led to her resignation.
The interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday and is tasked with organizing the elections.
In an interview with the Times of India, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who lives in the US, stated, “At present, she is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government announces an election date.”
He did not specify whether Hasina, aged 76, plans to run for office again, noting that she had intended to retire after her current term.
Joy, who initially had no political ambitions and was settled in the US, has become involved in politics due to the recent crisis in Bangladesh.
He remarked, “The recent developments in Bangladesh have created a leadership vacuum. I needed to become active for the party’s sake, and now I am taking the lead.”
Hasina’s Awami League party is not part of the interim government, following a student-led uprising against her extended rule.
Her departure came after nationwide violence that led to approximately 300 deaths and thousands of injuries. She is currently staying in a secure location in New Delhi. There have been rumors that she might seek asylum in Britain, but the British Home Office has not commented on the matter.
India’s foreign minister has indicated that he discussed the situation with his British counterpart, though no further details were provided.
