Severe Cold and Snow to Hit UK Next Week, Met Office Warns

London: The UK is preparing for a severe Arctic cold wave next week, with forecasters warning of heavy snowfall and plunging temperatures across large parts of the country.
The Met Office has issued alerts that some areas could receive up to 10 inches (25cm) of snow, while temperatures in Scotland are expected to drop to -6°C.
Central and northern Scotland, as well as northern England, are likely to see the heaviest snowfall, with some parts of Scotland potentially receiving as much as 30cm. Northern England is expected to record 14–15cm of snow.

Meteorologists said the cold spell will follow a brief period of milder weather after widespread disruption caused by Storm Goretti earlier this month. The latest system is driven by bitterly cold Arctic air moving southwards, interacting with a low-pressure system from the north and west, which is expected to bring unsettled conditions.
The Met Office warned of potential hazards from snow and freezing temperatures between January 17 and 26. In addition to snowfall, further low-pressure systems from the Atlantic could bring heavy rain, posing risks for travel and infrastructure, particularly in areas still recovering from Storm Goretti.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions against icy roads, snow-related disruptions, and freezing conditions, while monitoring official updates as the Arctic blast approaches.
