Senate Chairman Greenlights Summoning APUBTA In Standing Committee

Islamabad: In light of the continuing demonstrations by teachers outside the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani has granted approval for summoning the President of the All Public Universities BPS Teachers Association (APUBTA). This decision clears the path for the President’s participation in the upcoming meeting of the Federal Education and Professional Training Standing Committee.

This decision follows a notable intervention by Senator Saadia Abbasi, who brought attention to the grievances of the protesting teachers, particularly their pressing demands for a well-defined service structure and an equitable promotion policy.

Central to the teachers’ demands is the long-awaited issuance of an official notification endorsing a comprehensive service structure and promotion policy applicable to all Basic Pay Scale (BPS) teachers in public sector universities. This demand reiterates a commitment previously made by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in written correspondence, underlining the imperative nature of resolving this persistent issue.

Senator Saadia expressed her dismay at the absence of substantial progress, despite prior directives to the HEC on this matter from the National Assembly and its corresponding Standing Committee. As a result, she urged the chairman to refer the issue to the relevant Senate standing committee for a more in-depth examination.

Chairman Sanjrani duly recognized the gravity of the situation and endorsed the proposal for further scrutiny of the matter within the Senate.
